Frederick Revisits the Revolution: The 1824 Visit of Lafayette to Frederick, Maryland

Frederick County was "in an uproar" in December 1824. Area residents hunted for game, farmers shared their finest produce and spirits, the rooms of Talbott's Tavern were readied for a grand ball, and Frederick City staged an impressive military parade with cannonfire, bell ringing, and fireworks to welcome a very special visitor. When the Marquis de Lafayette came to Frederick, his visit recalled the living memories of half a century before and the role that Frederick County played in the Revolutionary War. Veterans of the militia and Continental Army were present, as well as German soldiers hired to fight for the British who came to Frederick as prisoners of war at the end of the conflict. In recorded speeches, we can see how they reflected on their role in the shaping of a new nation. In this presentation, Jody Brumage will explore the events of December 1824 and how this momentous occasion helped to preserve our community's Revolutionary War legacy for future generations.
